Finding accommodation & starting a flat share in a foreign country

You have the Medical entrance test successfully completed your studies and received your acceptance letter from the medical university. You can finally get started! But before you can really get started with your studies, there is one more hurdle to overcome, which is best taken care of right from the start. It's about finding accommodation, and that in a foreign country. Finding a flat during the Medical studies abroad is not just a place to sleep, but also a place to study, relax, socialise and much more. It is therefore all the more important to take an informed and well-considered approach from the outset. It is a decision that can influence the rest of your studies in many ways.

Unfortunately, when looking for accommodation in a foreign country, there is a risk of being ripped off, especially if you want to speed up the search. Therefore, such a process on your own is usually very stressful and time-consuming. For this reason, I myself relied on the help of futuredoctor, as they already have a good network of local estate agents. But in order for them to help you find accommodation abroad, you should first realise what exactly you are looking for.

First of all, you need to decide whether you would prefer to live alone or in a shared flat. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Personally, I realised right from the start that I wouldn't be living alone during my medical studies. Every now and then after a long day at university, it's nice to have someone around without having to leave the house.

A few days after I learnt that I would be accepted to study medicine at the Comenius University to Bratislava the search had already begun. The question of who I wanted to move in with had already been answered, as I had already made my first contacts during the futuredoctor preparation week. So I already had a certain idea of who I would be living with.

We thought about what requirements the flat should fulfil. In our case, we wanted a 4-room flat, as there were three of us and we also wanted a living room. The location should also be suitable, of course, because as a medical student abroad you want to get as much out of student life as possible.

After we told our futuredoctor 'supervisors', we received 3 flat proposals within 24 hours, one of which we decided on immediately. As you can see, everything was actually really easy.

The best thing about Bratislava is that you get super good value for money. In Stuttgart, the city I come from, you could only dream of such a flat. After moving house, I now live with my flatmate in a new flat with just under 100m2, a balcony and in the centre of the city. What more could you want?

I also learnt about the difficulties that fellow students and friends had in their search. It was really great that we had such an easy time with futuredoctor.
