Additional aptitude quota ZEQ: The criteria. The additional aptitude quota has been part of the selection procedure for admission to the Human Medicine degree programme since the 2020 summer semester. In this article, you will get an overview of what the ZEQ is and what your chances are within it.
Additional suitability quota: General
In the selection procedure for state universities, there are a total of 3 relevant quotas. On the one hand the "High school graduation quota" where you get a pretty good NC need. This accounts for 30% of the study places!
Then there is the "Selection procedure of the universities". What counts here above all is your TMS-result, combined with your NC. Each university can decide for itself how much influence the TMS (or HAM-NAT) on admission. A total of 60% of study places are allocated via the AdH.
The ZEQ ultimately accounts for the remaining 10% of the study places. The following criteria are relevant in the Central Aptitude Quota:
Additional ZEQ suitability quota: these are the criteria
The ZEQ only uses criteria that are independent of school grades. This means that even if you have a rather poor school-leaving certificate, you have a good chance of getting a place in this quota!
The following criteria are relevant:
- Waiting period (until summer semester 2022)
- Study aptitude test (TMS/HAM-NAT)
- Recognised vocational training
- Recognised professional activity
- Recognised service (FSJ)
- Recognised prize (School Olympics)
- University interview (so far only University of Dresden/Chemnitz)
So the waiting period is still taken into account?
In the winter semester 2021/2022, you can only receive a maximum of 30 points for your waiting time (i.e. two points per waiting semester, a total of 100 points in ZEQ). These 30 points are awarded for 15 or more semesters of waiting time. With fewer waiting semesters, the consideration decreases linearly here as well. From summer semester 2022, the waiting period will no longer be taken into account at all.
Additional suitability quota: How strongly are the criteria weighted?
The universities attach varying degrees of importance to the respective criteria. The University of Bielefeld, for example, can award up to 70 points for your TMS result while the University of Aachen only awards up to 35 points.
The distribution of points for the other criteria is also completely different. If you would like to know what this looks like in detail and at the same time a step-by-step guide to your university place, then take a look here:

To the e-booksThese are your opportunities at ZEQ
Since the final grade of your Abitur does not play a role in the ZEQ, you can roughly estimate what your chances are.
Without a TMS result, you have no chance in the ZEQ either! Rather, the TMS also plays a major role here. So 100% full throttle at the TMS, because you can only take part once.
If you have already collected a few semesters of waiting time, you will have a big advantage over your fellow applicants until the 2022 summer semester. If you also have a vocational qualification and a good TMS result, then your chances are not bad!
Finally, however, it should be noted that only 10% of the study places are allocated via the ZEQ. Given the immense surplus of applicants, this is rather low. So don't rely completely on the Central Aptitude Quota. You need a solid strategy and intensive planning in order to get a study place as effectively as possible. We can help you with this!
