A-levels in medicine: do you need a 1.0? In this article you will find out the selection limits of the Numerus Claususto get a place in the 1st quota.

The Abitur quota: General

In the selection procedure for state universities, there are a total of 3 relevant quotas.

On the one hand, the "Selection procedure of the universities". What counts here is your TMS result combined with your NC. Each university can decide for itself how much influence the TMS (or HAM-NAT) on admission. A total of 60% of study places are allocated via the AdH.

Then there is the ZEQ (Central Aptitude Quota)which can be used to allocate 10% of the study places. Only criteria independent of school grades are relevant here! So with an Abitur of 2.5-3, you have the best chances here.

Finally, there is the Abitur quota. 30% of study places are allocated via the NC alone. Only your ABI average actually plays a role here. So is it true that you need an average of 1.0 to be accepted here?

A-levels in medicine: Do you need a 1.0?

It is important to note that it is not really your NC and therefore your grade that matters! Rather, it is about the number of points you have achieved with your performance in the sixth form. A maximum of 900 points is possible here.

You might notice at this point that the scores can vary depending on the federal state. This means that a certain Abitur average has a different score depending on the federal state! For example, if you apply from Rhineland-Palatinate for a study place in Hesse, you have different chances of getting a place than applicants from Berlin. On the one hand, this can be quite an advantage and make the decisive difference, but on the other hand, it can also be a major disadvantage in the Abitur quota.

You don't necessarily need a 1.0!

For the winter semester 2020/21, i.e. the first winter semester in which the Abitur quota was newly introduced, exact data is available on the average you needed to be accepted.

The result: You need an NC of 1.2 or better to have a chance of getting a place. Admittedly, your chances are not particularly good with a 1.2 and it depends very much on your federal state whether you get a place. But admission is definitely possible.

The myth that you absolutely need a 1.0 Abitur to Study medicine is definitely not true!

Your ABI cut is not good enough? No problem!

To the great advantage of some applicants, the Abitur quota only accounts for 30% of all study places. This means that if your ABI average is not good enough, there are still plenty of chances to get a place.

Now it's time for you to improve your numerus clausus! To do this, you need the right strategy and approach, because there's a lot you can do wrong. We can help you and your NC to find the right strategy to get a place at university as quickly and effectively as possible.
