Medical studies in Split, Croatia

The School of Medicine at the University of Split (USSM) was originally founded in 1974 as part of the University of Zagreb. Initially, medical students were able to complete the last two years of their training in Split. Over the years, the School of Medicine was able to establish itself as an independent faculty and was affiliated to the University of Split in 1997. While it was initially only possible to study human medicine in Croatian, a further study programme was established in 2011, entirely in English: Medical Studies in English.

USSM was able to repeat this success story internationally once again in 2016 when it launched a cooperation programme with a German hospital association in Upper Franconia and Southern Thuringia. In the partner programme, students on the Medical Studies in English programme complete their first three pre-clinical years at USSM. From the 4th year onwards, the cohort is divided into students who remain in Split and students who transfer to the German hospital network in Upper Franconia and Southern Thuringia. The courses and content remain the same in both groups, but the students of the hospital network are largely trained by doctors from the surrounding area and spend their practical assignments in the local clinics and medical practices. The University of Split not only emphasises teaching, but is also actively involved in research, particularly in areas such as cancer research and genetic analyses.

  • Students of the hospital network receive the "Medical Doctor" degree from the University of Split

  • Graduates receive a degree that is recognised throughout the EU

  • The German hospital network in Upper Franconia and Southern Thuringia offers numerous financing options and supports the path to specialist training

  • Recognised proof of English language skills at B2 level

  • An 8-week Nursing internshipwhich you must have completed by the start of your studies

On the selection days, you will get to know the committee personally in a one-to-one interview - and they will get to know you. It is also possible for the hospital association to pay the tuition fees if the graduate completes their specialist training in one of the hospital association's clinics.

In addition, in co-operation with the Sparkasse Coburg-Lichtenfels, an educational loan is offered which is based on the KfW interest rates. This loan covers the tuition fees. After graduation, the loan is suspended for two years and you can start your specialist training. After these two years, i.e. 8 years after starting your studies, you will then start to repay the loan. The instalments are based on the average starting salary of a doctor, which is generally much higher than in other professions
