The University of Debrecen offers comprehensive six-year Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and five-year Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) programmes that combine theoretical learning with clinical training and internships.
- The M.D. programme includes basic medical sciences in the first two years, clinical subjects in the third and fourth years, and clinical rotations and internships in specialties such as neurology and paediatrics in the final two years.
- The D.M.D. programme focuses on dental anatomy, pre-clinical practice and clinical subjects in the first years, followed by an intensive clinical internship in the fifth year.
- In both degree programmes, basic knowledge of Hungarian is required from the third year onwards.

Admission procedure
The admission procedure at the University of Debrecen is designed to select the best applicants for medical studies. Applicants must have a high school diploma with good grades in biology and chemistry/physics and pass a compulsory entrance examination consisting of written and oral tests in these subjects. Alternatively, students who complete the basic course in medicine at the university can be admitted directly. The application process includes submitting an online application with a non-refundable fee, passing the entrance exam and, after admission, applying for a student visa to study in Hungary.

How long has the University of Debrecen been in existence? Is it accredited?
The university was officially founded in 1912, but considering its predecessors, it has existed since 1538.
The University conducts its programmes in accordance with the European Qualifications Framework of the Bologna Process. Therefore, diplomas obtained at the University of Debrecen are generally recognised in the countries of the European Union. In addition, all our programmes are accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Council, which is part of the European Accreditation Council. Medical programmes are accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO), the State Education Department (NY, USA), the Medical Board of California, the General Medicine Council, the Medical Councils of India (an entrance examination is mandatory), Israel, Ireland, Iran, Norway and the United Arab Emirates.
Are degree programmes offered online?

How can I earn money during my studies?

What is the difference between a Unipass and a student ID card?
The Unipass card is issued by UD for the university community (students and staff) and grants you privileges at local services as well as access to certain services. It also serves as your library card at UD. The student card, on the other hand, is issued by the government, identifies you as a student and is accepted everywhere in Hungary (also for certain services in Europe). Students mainly use it to get discounts on public transport or cinema tickets.
Can I complete my Master's degree programme according to an individual study plan?
In certain cases (which only apply to medical degree programmes) yes. There are several ways to apply for an individualised study plan, depending on which Bachelor's degree you have and which subjects you have completed.
What is a passive semester?
If you have to take a break from your studies due to an unforeseen situation, you can apply for a passive semester. During a passive semester, you interrupt your studies, do not have to attend any courses and effectively take a break.
Please note that you can complete a maximum of 2 consecutive passive semesters!
No tuition fee is payable for the passive semester, but the insurance is covered by the tuition fee.
How can I register for subjects?
You can register for subjects/courses via the university's online student database, NEPTUN.
For new students on medical and healthcare degree programmes (only for the first semester), registration takes place via the Student Secretariat. From the second semester onwards, you must register yourself, but will be supported by the relevant university staff.
Can I pay the tuition fee in instalments?
First-year students cannot apply to pay in instalments as they need the bank transfer receipt/confirmation from the university for the visa. From the 2nd year onwards, students can also pay the tuition fee in two instalments if they wish.

When do I have to pay the school fees for the school year? How do I pay it?
If you require a visa to enter Hungary, the full annual tuition fee must be paid upon receipt of the letter of admission (by 15 July for studies starting in September, by 15 November for studies starting in spring). The University of Debrecen can only issue the documents for the visa once the fee has been paid.
In the case of medical degree programmes: You should have your Secure a study placeby paying the place reservation fee stated in your letter of admission within two weeks. We cannot guarantee places for students who pay after the deadline.
If you can enter Hungary without a visa, the rest of the tuition fee can be paid in two instalments - 1st semester: before registration, 2nd semester: by 31 March. Students who pay the entire annual tuition fee in one instalment before registration for the first semester receive a discount.
