Medical studies: We would do our FSJ here

📖 Table of contents

Medical studies: This is where we would do our FSJ. There are many options for the Voluntary Social Year. However, there are a few things to consider, such as the recognition of the FSJ. But other aspects should also be taken into account when making your decision. What exactly you should attach importance to and in which medical field we should specialise. FSJ you can find out in this article:

Medicine: When is an FSJ recognised?

First of all, the FSJ must last at least 11 full months in order to be recognised. So if one of the reasons for the FSJ is that you want to complete your NC then make sure that you adhere to this minimum duration.

If you cancel the FSJ beforehand, nothing will be recognised for your medical studies! There is also no activity that can replace the FSJ. Unfortunately, a 6-month internship in a hospital will not help you when applying to state universities.

The FSJ: Which activities are recognised?

First of all, the FSJ must last at least 11 full months in order to be recognised. So if one of the reasons for the FSJ is that you want to complete your Improve NC then make sure that you adhere to this minimum duration.

The following activities will be recognised as FSJ:

  • FSJ (e.g. with the fire brigade or rescue service)
  • FÖJ
  • International Youth Volunteer Service
  • Federal Voluntary Service (BfD)
  • Development volunteer service Weltwärts
  • European Voluntary Service
  • Other service abroad (ADIA)
  • Civilian service
  • Voluntary military service
  • Medical FSJ abroad (e.g. Sri Lanka or Nepal) Important: ask carefully whether it is a recognised institution

The start of the FSJ is also extremely important, as otherwise you may not be able to have your FSJ recognised in the following year. If you want to know all the deadlines, dates, options and the best strategy for your A-level average, take a look here:

Is an FSJ even worthwhile for you?

Now that you know roughly where you can get credit for an FSJ activity, you should (if you haven't already done so) think about whether an FSJ is worthwhile for you at all.

We have already written an article on this that will certainly help you with your decision and give you an insight into how much an FSJ improves your NC.

Studying medicine: We would do our FSJ here

Admittedly, this is not easy, because the choice is huge. For us, however, there is still a shortlist. This relates exclusively to medical fields, as we believe that the experience there can be very helpful to you!

FSJ at the health authority

Here you get a pretty good insight into the healthcare system as a whole. The day-to-day work is also relatively varied and you can learn a lot for your future career.

FSJ on the ward

The classic option: you choose a hospital of your choice and do an FSJ there on a ward that particularly interests you. We would preferably choose a somewhat larger hospital (university hospital), as experience shows that you can see and learn more there. Of course, it also depends on the ward you are on. You will certainly be allowed to be present at an operation from time to time. From neurology to visceral surgery, you can do your FSJ on any ward. Apply early so that you have a free choice.

The advantage: You get the entire Nursing internship credited.

FSJ with the rescue service

The best choice for us! An FSJ with the ambulance service offers you an insight into almost all areas of medicine. You will get to know the care of a patient on the street and at the same time learn how to deal with staff and premises in a hospital. You will also regularly work in doctors' surgeries and care centres. Here you will be taught how to hand over a patient to a doctor correctly and much more.

You will also learn relevant skills such as inserting access lines, taping ECGs and measuring blood pressure in the ambulance service. Another big advantage of the FSJ is that you complete your training as a paramedic at the same time and don't have to pay any money for it. This training normally costs €2000. It depends on the university, but sometimes you will also be given 1-2 months Nursing internship credited.

Conclusion

Medical studies: This is where we would do our FSJ. If you come to the conclusion that you would like to do a FSJ then we would like to recommend the ambulance service to you. There is a lot of variety, deep insights into medicine and dealing with patients and certainly a lot of fun. Training as a paramedic is also available, which means you can always work alongside your medical studies.
