Medical study place claim: chances of success

Medical study place appeal: chances of success. A recognised way to avoid the strict selection process at medical universities is to file a lawsuit for a place at university. In this article, you can find out exactly what it is, how it works and what your chances are.

Medical study place claim: How it works

In principle, not everyone can get a place to study medicine. The reason for this is that every year the number of applicants significantly exceeds the number of places and therefore a selection has to be made between the applicants.

So if you have a poorer A-level average, it can be very difficult to change this. However, there are a few weak points in the whole process of allocating study places.

If there are places that are not considered at the beginning of the semester,
then these places are contestable in court! The universities themselves are responsible for ensuring that these places are properly released.

This is exactly where the so-called "Studienplatzklage" comes into play and can ensure that you are granted a university place.

Does every applicant then have a chance of getting the remaining study places?

A very clear no! The study places that are "uncovered" by law firms are only available to those who initiated the proceedings. Accordingly, you have no right to these additional study places without taking legal action.

How much does it cost to apply for a place to study medicine?

It all depends here. The complaint does not apply universally to all universities! This means that it must be decided how many universities will be sued at the same time. Accordingly, it can be cheaper or more expensive.

To throw a figure into the room that could be a small clue: You are unlikely to get a study place for less than €10,000. But there are certainly exceptions, which is why you can't be too specific here, and in the end it depends on the law firm how high the prices are.

What are the chances of success for a medical student application?

No exact statistics of the law firms are published on the internet, which is why it is rather difficult to speak of reliable sources of information at this point.

However, it is definitely the case that it is not guaranteed to get a study place directly with a complaint! Overall, we at MEDstudents assume that the chances per complaint are around 20-40%.

Do your NC and TMS results affect your chances of success?

This is indeed the case. But why is that?

Quite simply because several applicants may have submitted an application for the same study place. The applicant who best fulfils the relevant criteria in the allocation procedure will be awarded the place.

This means that you can significantly increase your chances of success, even if you are suing for a university place.

Conclusion: Conduct a counselling interview

If you are interested in applying for a university place because your A-level average, or the TMS were simply not good enough, then we advise you to simply have a free consultation with a law firm.

Then you will receive a detailed explanation of everything and can still decide whether you want to invest the money in this way.

In any case, remember that you may save yourself a lot of time and effort and that it can actually pay off financially (compare tuition fees privately and in other EU countries). But also bear in mind that it is not guaranteed that you will get a place at university.
