TMS Repeatable: This changes for you

TMS Repeatable: This is changing for you. In October 2021, changes were announced for the coming year. With these changes, old approaches, such as the rule that you should not take the TMS in the same year as the Abitur, will become obsolete.

But what does this mean for you in concrete terms? We explain everything you need to know about the TMS in this article.

Good TMS result is crucial!

The Numerus Clausus for medical studies is unfortunately still between 1.0 and 1.3, depending on the university.

30% of applicants only get a place on a degree programme based on their Abitur average. This is done via the so-called Baccalaureate quota. In order to have a chance in the other two quotas (AdH, ZEQ), since the decision of the BvG in 2020, a good TMS result is absolutely essential.

It is very important that you set all the right conditions to be able to achieve your best performance! This certainly includes when you take part in the TMS.

Before the changes in October 2021, it was quite normal to wait 1 year after graduating from high school before taking part in the TMS. But that was because you could only take the TMS once! From 2022, everything will be different, so this strategy is more likely to become obsolete.

Here are all the changes for 2022 and then the right strategy for you.

TMS 2022 all changes at a glance

You should note the following 4 changes if you want to take part in the TMS:

1. two TMS rounds per year

Instead of just one date (in April-May), there are now two! A spring TMS (Saturday, 7 May 2022, Sunday, 8 May 2022) and an autumn TMS (Sunday, 6 November 2022, Monday, 7 November 2022)

There will be two rounds for each of these two dates!

2. 3 registration phases per TMS round

There are 3 registration phases for the two medical test runs in spring and autumn. This is very important if you want to take part!

  • Phase 1: never participated in the TMS before
  • Phase 2: for all preferred TMS repeaters
  • Phase 3: for all repeaters

For the registration deadlines, you should here Stay up to date.

3. you can repeat the TMS once!

You can probably tell from the registration phases that the TMS can be repeated from 2022! However, this must be done within one year.

This does not apply to those who have already taken part and, until the latest changes, thought that they could no longer write the TMS! You have the chance to retake the TMS one last time until 2023.

However, it is important to note that you can only repeat this once, so there is no third attempt!

If you then apply with your TMS result, you can use the better of the two percentile ranks (if you have taken part twice).

4th subtest Concentrated and careful work is cancelled!

The Concentrated and careful working subtest was only a small part of the TMS and took about 8 minutes to complete. This part has been completely omitted and "pattern matching" is tested for longer instead.

The good thing is that this subtest was not particularly popular, so you can be glad that you don't have to prepare for it. In addition, you now have 8 minutes longer for the pattern matching tasks, as the number of patterns remains the same!

TMS 2022: What will change for you now

TMS Repeatable: So what changes for you? The approach and strategy should change completely for most TMS participants after these changes. We recommend the following:

  • use both attempts in any case!
  • the second attempt gets your full attention (4 months preparation)

Is your A-levels just around the corner and you want to Study medicinethen use the autumn TMS in the same year! That way you can do a trial run and familiarise yourself with the whole process. It's also quite possible that you'll already be successful there.

If it doesn't work out, then you will take part in the spring TMS next year! But you should then be focussed on 100%.

Surely the changes should also change your attitude towards Ham-NAT and MedAT change. Depending on what your NC looks like, it might make sense to focus exclusively on the TMS now!

However, you should also bear in mind that your competition is also getting stronger now. TMS repeaters will have a huge advantage over first-time participants. Conversely, this means that your result will be influenced by extremely good participants and it may be much more difficult to achieve a high percentage rank.
